The National Agricultural Institute's (NAI) focus is to create low-cost, standards-based curriculum and assessments for agriculture, food and natural resources (AFNR). The curricula and assessments will be available on multiple electronic platforms.
The idea behind the curriculum development is the high cost of textbooks and the national movement of education toward electronic publications and resources. The curriculum being developed is basically an outline series ("just the facts") tied to national content standards. Instead of color photographs and charts, like books use to enhance the content, these curricula will contain QR codes with links to colorful and rich Internet resources and presentations.
Besides being available electronically, the curricula will be available as hard copies at a much lower price than the typical textbook in the hard copy format. The outline series will cost no more than $50 per book. The first three books in the outline series are: Plant Science; Soil Science and Animal Science. Our target market is the dual credit level so we can hit the junior-senior level in high schools and freshman level in colleges. Plant, soil, and animal science are core knowledge areas for AFNR and ideal for STEM (science, technology engineering, and math) context.
Another project of NAI is Ag101. This project provides basic agricultural knowledge and literacy through a website, Facebook, and a book. The book will be published by NAI and made available to everyone needing to tell the story of modern agriculture.
