Avoyelles Parish, at the crossroads of Central Louisiana, takes its name from the Avoyelles Indians who inhabited the area. The parish is in the center of the state and has a population of approximately 40,000. The parish has been traditionally known as a "Sportsman's Paradise" with abundant wildlife and fisheries. Avoyelles has a diverse economy that involves agriculture, manufacturing, forestry and tourism.

Agriculture & Natural Resources
Crops-cultivar evaluations were conducted with wheat, corn, grain sorghum, and cotton in order to assess local performance. In depth, whole practice recommendations were tested with verification fields in rice and soybean production. Farmers gained knowledge of LSU AgCenter recommendations for production of cotton, rice, soybean, grain sorghum, crawfish, corn, and sugarcane grower clinics.

Master Gardener Education-42 participants engaged in classes on annuals, perennials, tree production, and shrub maintenance, turf management and vegetable gardening.

Horticulture-Clients learn about best management practices for gardens, lawns, land-scapes, and fruit/vegetable trees.

Pest Management-Growers, homeowners learn pest control strategies along with educa-tion about pesticides, the environment, and safe use.
