New Orleans is a major port in the United States and the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. La Nouvelle-Orléans (New Orleans) was founded in 1718, by the French Mississippi Company, under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, on land inhabited by the Chitimacha Native American tribe. It is often referred to as the birthplace of jazz. The city is sometimes referred to by its many nicknames including “The Big Easy”, “The Crescent City”, "The City that Care Forgot”, “Nawlins”, and “NOLA” the acronym for New Orleans, Louisiana.
Agriculture & Natural Resources
The LSU AgCenter is working in Orleans Parish to promote best management practices in consumer and commercial horticulture by providing access to research-based educational materials and LSU agricultural specialists. More than 1,600 residents from schools, community organizations, farmer’s markets, and gardening enthusiasts learned beginners’ beekeeping and tree care. More than 40 volunteers were trained through the Master Gardener Program.
